DUp 180 ⌛ Dozen Days to go, Workshops Alert *Guest Ed - Design Education in India* Design Your Career, Evening with Don Norman

💌 In this Newsletter - A definitive set of resources from this year’s speaker, A Balasubramanium, Director, Institute of Design, JK Lakshmipat University, and “fresh-off-our-minds” update from last evening’s event, An Evening with Don Norman, and a ton of DesignUp Conference 2024 news below!

In the words of Hemant Suthar, part of DesignUp’s Board of Directors, “It takes a lot of gears to spin together like clockwork, like an exercise in systems design to come up with a conference like DesignUp!

Many volunteers - all balancing their day jobs with this passion project, former attendees, speakers, and friends of DUp, contribute to making this labor of love go from an idea to reality.”

💖 An Evening with Don Norman

Last evening BITS Design School Mumbai & DesignUp Conference were delighted to host the legendary Don Norman at Bangalore, over an evening of conversations, casual, and conversational. No AI was involved. Not the chatty types for sure. Just real humans, real conversations, lived experiences, and refreshed perspectives. And dinner to keep the conversations flowing.

Don shared his thinking about the evolution of the field of Design, how we designers need to expand our learning beyond the craft, understand the business, finance, economics, politics, environment, and build on the most fundamental skill - understand the people we’re designing for. “We design to help other people,” he said. It was refreshing how Don, at 88, was as fresh and sprightly as ever, and shared with us how his thinking on Design has evolved over the years. The evening ended with Don signing the attendees’ copies of Don’s books - what a memento!

We have to expand Human-Centred Design into Humanity-Centred Design.”

A Balasubramaniam, a voracious thought leader who has successfully launched two design institutes in North India, IILM SCHOOL of Design Gurgaon, and JKLU Institute of Design, Jaipur, is a known face in the design community in India. He is a designer, blogger, writer, teacher, director, and a doting Dad of two brilliant daughters. In this edition, Bala has shared a selection of resources on the history and philosophy of Design Education in India -

I believe in intellectual honesty and commitment to excellence. I believe that what I teach should be current and contemporary. I’m a life-long learner and keep my students intensely busy!

Here is my list of links that will give a fair idea about Design Education in India and how it started. The Eames Report in 1958, called the “India Report“ gave directions to set up a design Institute in India. The National Institute of Design was set up as a result of this. Take a look at the short, crisp India report here to know how it all began: The India Report by Charles and Ray Eames PDF

If there is one blog to read to keep track of design in India, then head over to Design For India by MP Ranjan. Blogged by the late Professor MP Ranjan, educator and design advocate, who was a keen observer and a tenacious critic. Though he passed away in 2015 his blog is still a rich resource on all things design in India. He has documented the evolving discipline of design quite succinctly.

If there is a discussion about Design Education, then Don Norman’s ideas are never to be ignored. Watch this key video on the future of design education.

The field of Design itself is changing, morphing from a form-giving activity to a strategizing, policy-influencing profession. Take a look at how design affects policy-making, a new area of work for designers and non-designers alike:

Much thought has gone into putting together JKLU’s Institute of Design, which I head. My blog is a good place to find out why our institute has students from 23 different states and how our program is producing a “new  kind” of designers who are ethical, enterprising, and evolved:
