DesignUp 🚀 Issue #56 > The Human, Emotions, Reflections, Hx Issue

As we grapple-with and create super-smart, vastly-efficient, gigaflop-fast systems - the warm, fuzzy, thoughtful, emotional, eccentric bits that define our species can sometimes get left out. This is a collection of articles that nudges us to consider all that makes us, uniquely us!

On that note - I look forward to meeting many of you in person at the DesignUp conference - it's just 2 weeks away and many of the speakers there will be speaking of balancing these human, humane aspects with cutting edge, almost magical tech.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Iñárritu (of Birdman and The Revanant fame) won a Honorary Oscar for Carne y Arena (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible) a magical VR installation that let's you get into the shoes of refugees. The Academy says "it's in recognition of a visionary and powerful experience in storytelling".

Everything is getting smarter, apparently. And "as 'smart' technology proliferates and enables the objects in our lives to sense, process, and connect, humans are on the cusp of developing a more emotional relationship with our devices." Or are we?

The last time you faced a huge, maybe even life-changing decision, was it pure logic which guided you? Or did you listen to your “gut” — that unexplainable feeling of just knowing? So here's a case for injecting a bit of emotion into our designs...

Our relentless "focus on information processing, reaction, and execution" answering emails, attending stand-ups, war-rooms, meetings takes a toll. A toll on the quality and depth of thinking—here's a few tricks to regain the lost (or fast disappearing) Art of reflective thinking... Esp vital for those who need to call upon their creative reserves for cracking problems.

A comprehensive overview from DesignUp's Pre-conference event - where artist, technologist and futurist, Monika Bielskyte talks about creating for AR/VR, focusing on the Human Experience and more...

That's all for this week - speak soon,
