DesignUp 🚀 Issue #46 > SciFi & Design

Last week I stumbled upon this Font Map from IDEO, enjoyed watching a short TED Talk on Fear-Setting, listening to episodes of Designer News Podcast, esp one featuring Mikael Cho, CEO/Founder of Unsplash (I have a very long commute and there a lot of good ones on that list, this is #12). Plus this fascinating read on how Slack is being used to fight crime!

This one is the SciFi and Design Issue. We have a long history and a love affair. And interestingly a penchant for complicated multi-dial or organic, intricate interfaces that flow, bend, extrude magically to our commands - without the need for any magic wand.

Plus, featuring our next DesignUp speaker and more events...

It's 15 years since Minority Report hit our screens and became the defacto reference point for interfaces of the future. In this talk from 2010, the film's science adviser and inventor John Underkoffler "demos g-speak -- the real-life version of the film's eye-popping, tai chi-meets-cyberspace computer interface." TED asks - Is this how tomorrow's computers will be controlled? I find it fascinating rewinding back to see the future predictions, this is no different!

This one is a quick mashup of SciFi UI styles with loads of clips to keep fan boys (and girls) delighted. And for those of you who are not fans of this genre, its still worth a dekko anyway!

25 years ago, author Neal Stephenson wrote Snow Crash, "a cyberpunk exploration of then-futuristic technologies: mobile computing, virtual reality, wireless Internet, digital currency, smartphones, and augmented-reality headsets".

Uncannily prescient, Stephenson is now Chief Futurist for MagicLeap and in this long read and "with the benefit of 25 years of hindsight, talks about the differences between augmented and virtual reality, how to create a convincing Metaverse, and why social media is driving us apart."

More Interestingness

I have followed Khoi Vinh's blog subtraction, for many many years and his work as a Director of Design for NYTimes Online. Khoi recently cofounded Wildcard and this is a interesting take on being different, for better...

You know the theme - but the real joy is in the experience. It's a long read, but worth a quick immersion!

DesignUp Speaker Announcement

Introducing DesignUp's next speaker: Justin Bolognino (the “g” is silent) or JB (esp given the Indian penchant for abbr.) JB's endeavours are threaded by experiential, real-time design and technology focused on revealing hidden human connections. The “Synchronicity Architect” is Founder and CEO of META.is, creator, designer and curator of The Lab at Panorama, founder of Learned Evolution, #FEED powered by Twitter and was Creative & Media Director at Brooklyn Bowl from its inception.

Justin's works are a surreal, or hyper-real blend of music, motion, projections and mixed reality—creating immersive experiences beyond screens in the now!
